Conversation with Megan Goldin
We had the privilege to have a quick conversation with Megan Goldin the author of Stay Awake which was our Crime/Thriller book pick of the month for September Mystery Booxies – Our book subscription box.
We devoured Stay Awake especially with a lot of caffeine because trust us this book will keep you awake turning pages until there are no more pages to turn, so a cup of organic coffee or some Espresso Martini will come in very handy.
Can you describe your new book Stay Awake (your elevator pitch)?
MG: Stay Awake is a psychological thriller about a magazine reporter who wakes up in the back of a taxi thinking that she's been out partying only to discover strangers living in her apartment and creepy writing on her hands. By the time that she realizes that she's forgotten the last two years of her life, she falls asleep and wakes up once again with no memory.
What was the hardest part of writing this book?
MG: The book was written from the perspective of an amnesiac who is suddenly confronted with the realization that she's lost her memory. All she knows is that she has scary writing on her hands and a knife covered in blood in her coat pocket. It was an enormous challenge to create Liv's sense of disorientation for my readers while ensuring that the plot wasn't too complicated to follow and maintained taut suspense.
If you know you will lose your memory when you go to sleep, what message would write to yourself?
MG: I'd probably write the sorts of messages that Liv wrote on her hands! Things like 'Stay Awake' and 'I forget everything when I sleep'.
What’s your favourite recent read?
MG: I've been enjoying The Thursday Murder Club series by Richard Osman. They're wonderfully witty and sweet stories with great murder plots and loveable characters.
What’s your favourite writing/reading snack or drink?
MG: Chocolate and tea. I am trying to cut back on the chocolate because I eat way too much of it. As for the tea, for sheer relaxation there's nothing like a good cup of tea!
If you are granted a wish to live anywhere you like, where would you choose to live? And why?
MG: I'd love to live somewhere with a climate where it's warm but not too hot all year round. I’m allergic to cold weather but I find hot summers unbearable. I'm happy to take suggestions.
If you could invite a celebrity to dinner, who would that be?
MG: Wow! That's a tough question. There are so many celebrities that I'd love to meet. I'd have to write a guest list. If I could invite only one celebrity to dinner then I'd probably invite Keanu Reeved. By all accounts, he sounds like a truly lovely person and very down to earth. I'm pretty sure that it would be a chill evening with simple but delicious food and plenty of laughs.
